The Stained Glass Window

We are hoping that the large abstract stained glass window in the Junior Library will be accepted into Art UK – the online home for every public art collection in the UK.

The window was originally commissioned for the 1965 Cheltenham Grammar School Hester’s Way building, and rescued and renovated by Bristol Stained Glass when that building was demolished in 1996.  It's housed in the Junior Library and fills the room.  It's calming, beguiling and uplifting all at once!

The window has important links with the magnificent stained glass of Coventry Cathedral. There is every reason to believe that artists who worked on Coventry also lent a hand to the Pate’s project. It was designed and made – using a new innovative technique for holding the glass pieces together – by Tyrone Guy of the Royal College of Art. He was probably a protégé of the RCA’s Keith New, who worked on the stained glass of Coventry Cathedral. It certainly would appear that the Pate’s window was a project they moved onto after completing works for Coventry. The budget – just a few hundred pounds in the early 1960s – and brief, were devised by the then head-teacher Dr Arthur Bell. The brief was very expressive, being based on a passage from Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress!
