Professor Cedric Watts

Cedric Watts was a pupil at Cheltenham Grammar School from 1947 to 1955.  He served in the Royal Navy (qualifying as a Russian translator), entered Pembroke College, Cambridge, as an Open Exhibitioner, graduated in 1961 with a first in English, took a doctorate in 1965, and taught at Sussex University from 1965 to 2002, becoming a Professor in 1983.  He is currently Professor Emeritus of English.

He has published many books on literary topics and has edited numerous volumes by Shakespeare, Cunninghame Graham, Conrad and others. His edition of Macbeth has sold over a million copies, and his Final Exam: A Novel (by 'Peter Green') has been praised by Ian McEwan.
